핑크 플로이드의 창단 멤버인 시드 배릿은 지나친 약물 과용등으로 인해 일찍 밴드를 떠난다.
기타리스트 데이빗 길모어가 시드 배릿의 자리를 메꾸고 로저 워터스와 함께 밴드의 중요 송 라이터로 나섰지만, 핑크 플로이드에게 드리워진 시드 배릿의 그림자는 한동안 걷히지를 않았다.
 [Dark Side of the Moon]으로 국제적인 명성을 얻기 전까지, 핑크 플로이드의 앨범들은 시드 배릿이 주도했던 데뷔 앨범 [The Piper of the Gates of the Dawn]과 비교가 되어야만 했다.
 [Wish You Were Here]는 핑크 플로이드가 시드 배릿을 추모하며 만든 앨범이다. 이젠 같이 있을 수 없는 옛 친구 -(데이빗 길모어를 포함한 핑크 플로이드의 모든 멤버들은 시드 배릿의 친구였다.) 에 대한 만감이 교차하고 있는 듯한 [Wish You Were Here]는 핑크 플로이드의 모든 앨범 중 가장 인간적이고 비감어린 사운드를 담고 있다.
본작은 [Dark Side of the Moon]에 이어 차트 정상에 오르며 핑크 플로이드의 인기를 굳건히 했다.

[Wish You Were Here]는 핑크 플로이드의 앨범 중에서 가장 분명한 멜로디와 연주를 담고 있다. 핑크 플로이드는 [Wish You Were Here]를 통해 프로그레시브 록이 흔히 갖는 현학적인 구조보다는 보다 직접적인 인간적인 감정에 호소하고 있다. 심포닉 록 스타일의 드라마틱한 전개와 맞물린 비감어린 연주가 전해주는 감동적인 사운드는 코끝이 시릴 만큼 마음 속을 파고든다.
앨범의 첫 머리와 마지막에 담긴 "Shine on You Crazy Diamond pt. I & II"는 핑크 플로이드의 곡 중 가장 감동적인 곡이며 이들의 연주력이 최고로 발휘된 곡이기도 하다. 시드 배릿에 대한 회한과 그리움이 뒤엉킨 이 곡에선 핑크 플로이드 특유의 우주적인 사운드와 블루스의 한스런 감정이 교차되어 있다.
"Welcome to the Machine"은 릭 라이트의 건반이 압권이며, 로이 하퍼가 리드 보컬을 맡은 프로그레시브 블루스 "Have a Cigar"는 데이빗 길모어의 정상급의 기타 연주를 들을 수 있다.
시드 배릿에 대한 그리움으로 가득한 타이틀 곡, "Wish You Were Here"는 핑크 플로이드의 곡 중 가장 쓸쓸한 느낌을 주는 곡이다.

후에 로저 워터스의 탈퇴로 3/4가 되어버렸던 핑크 플로이드를 생각하면, 이 곡은 시드 배릿이 아닌 로저 워터스에게 들려줘야 할 곡이었을지도 모른다.
